Our entertainment each evening is to watch one or all of the aquariums and their inhabitants. (This is David's tank) A wonderful way to relax and enjoy the quiet that always ensues with our aquarium time. All the kids are fascinated with all the little creatures that have been added or miraculously appeared. We have "things" growing that came in the "live rock" over a year ago. You just never know what your going to find on any given night. Now that we are a multi aquarium family, with different eco-systems in each, there is always a show to be had somewhere.
This is my African Cichlid Tank. All of the cichlids are from the African Rift Lake called Malawi. They are among the most colorful freshwater fish in the world. So far we've had numerous babies out of this tank and I just delivered 8 to the fish store about a week ago. If you maximize this picture you can see more babies in the bottom right quadrant of the picture. (Sorry about the quality of the pic. I'm still learning about blurry pictures.) These guys will be leaving in about a month for new homes. These fish are primarily algae eaters.
These two pictures are of our "Can you find it all tank?" You have to look long and hard for most of the inhabitants of this tank. Can you see the Tuxedo Urchin? Can you find the Rainsford Goby or the Tailspot Blenny? What about the Percula Clown (Hint: Nemo)? and last but not least can you find the Bali Tiger Goby?
Can you find the Sea Hare? or the Sea Cucumber?
Believe it or not there is a fish in here called a Barnacle Blennie. He/She is about 1.5" long and full grown. It blends into the rock very skillfully.
This tank is 55 gallons, so keeping track of all the citizens can, and most of the time is, daunting. But the kids will sit in front of this aquarium for a long time looking specifically for one type of fish.
They are learning every day about patience, and about the fish/creatures that we have.
I don't have pictures of our agressive tank as I'm having some problems with algae at the moment. But I'll post some when we get the tank cleaned up from being so "overgrown" looking. The fish in this tank are really spectacular. We have a Porcupine Puffer, Snowflake Eel, a Lionfish and more. These fish get large and are large! Puffy is about 2 hands big now. We got her when she was just big enough to fit into the palm of my hand. {sigh} The kids really get a kick out of watching me feed this tank. I get soaked at just about every feeding. Puffy or Luna (Lunar Wrasse) will spit water on me or splash me with their tail. So I always make sure that I'm wearing something o.k. to get saltwater on. :-)
